Black and White Heniochus Butterflyfish (Heniochus acuminatus) for Saltwater Aquariums
Habitat: The Heniochus Butterfly in Its Natural Environment
In the wild, the Black and White Heniochus Butterflyfish, also known as the Heniochus Butterfly, is commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region, frequenting coral-rich areas, lagoons, and outer reef slopes. Their adaptability to varying reef environments makes them a versatile choice for marine aquarium enthusiasts.
Reef Compatibility: Heniochus Butterflyfish and Your Reef Tank
Considered not reef-safe, the Black and White Heniochus Butterflyfish (Heniochus Butterfly) may nip at coral formations. As with any butterflyfish, caution is advised when introducing them to a reef tank, especially with delicate corals or small-polyp stony corals.
Size and Lifespan: Moderation in Size, Longevity in Presence
Reaching a size of 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 centimeters) in captivity, these butterflyfish boast a moderate size, suitable for a range of tank setups. With proper care, they can have a lifespan of 5 to 7 years, making them a lasting presence in your aquarium.
Diet in Captivity: Nourishing Your Heniochus Butterfly
Maintaining the health of your Black and White Heniochus Butterflyfish involves providing a balanced diet. Omnivorous by nature, they thrive on a combination of high-quality marine flakes, pellets, frozen foods, and live offerings such as brine shrimp and mysis shrimp.
Aquaculture Availability: Sourcing Your Heniochus Butterflyfish
The Black and White Heniochus Butterflyfish are primarily sourced from the wild, with limited availability through aquaculture. It is advisable to check with reputable suppliers for the most current information on aquacultured specimens.
Compatibility with Other Fish and Invertebrates: Heniochus Butterfly in Community
Known for their peaceful demeanor, Black and White Heniochus Butterflyfish are generally compatible with a variety of tankmates. Suitable companions include the Banggai Cardinalfish (Pterapogon kauderni), Chalk Bass (Serranus tortugarum), Clownfish (Amphiprioninae), Yellow Watchman Goby (Cryptocentrus cinctus), and Cleaner Shrimp (Lysmata amboinensis).
Sexual Dimorphism: The Heniochus Butterfly Mystery
Black and White Heniochus Butterflyfish do not exhibit significant sexual dimorphism, making it challenging to distinguish males from females based on physical characteristics alone.
Juvenile to Adult Coloration Changes: Heniochus Butterfly Transformations
Juvenile Black and White Heniochus Butterflyfish display a predominantly black body with a striking white vertical stripe, creating a visually appealing contrast. As they mature, the black coloration deepens, and the white stripe becomes more pronounced, maintaining the species' characteristic appearance throughout their adulthood.
Temperament: Heniochus Butterflyfish in Your Community
Renowned for their peaceful temperament, Black and White Heniochus Butterflyfish are suitable for community aquariums. However, like any butterflyfish, individual temperaments can vary, and careful monitoring during the initial introduction period is recommended.

Have never bought from here before.Bought 3 and all fish arrived in great condition. Acclimated 3+ hours and then put in tank. All 3 began eating algae right away and no signs of stress. I look forward to purchasing the rest of my tank from here.
