The Black Sun Coral is commonly referred to as the Branched Black Tube or Tubastrea Black Sun Coral. This Black Tube Coral is a large polyp stony (LPS) coral. With its dark olive green to black colonial coral, it makes a gorgeous addition to any tank. The Black Sun Coral feeds on drifting zooplankton and its skeleton has tubes branching in all directions. Since it is fragile, we recommend you to handle it carefully and needs to be picked up by its underside when placing it in the aquarium. The Black Sun Coral requires moderate water current combined with low lighting levels to flourish well in the tank. It only expands its polyps in the evening or when it is hungry. The Black Sun Coral is very hardy in nature but is difficult to maintain in aquariums because it has special dietary needs. This coral has the unique feature for not possessing any zooxanthellae, thus needs external feeding. The Black Sun Coral must be regularly fed vitamin-enriched brine shrimp or micro plankton using an eyedropper directly to each of its polyps to promote rapid polyp budding. It will also benefit from the addition of calcium, strontium, and other trace elements to the water. Being a peaceful coral, the Black Sun Coral makes a good choice for a community fish tank. It thrives well in a temperature range of 72-78 degrees Fahrenheit and pH of 8.1-8.4. However the Black Sun Coral does not have strong stinging tentacles, so need to be kept away from other corals.
