The female white tailed wrasse species are distinguished by the white versus yellow band on the base of the tail and males by the lined versus spotted pattern on the body. It requires a normal care with a temperature range of 72 - 83F (22 - 28C) and has a normal diet of zooplankton and benthic invertebrate. The white tailed wrasse needs a meaty diet that contains fortified brine shrimp, black worms, mysis, and other meaty type frozen foods with at least two or three feedings per day for its continued good health. It might be difficult to feed in the beginning, and if so, try enticing it with some live foods. It is advised to keep the white tailed wrasse in aquaria of 55 gallon or larger with a deep sandbed as they mummify themselves at night, and when so, it can disturb bottom dwelling corals such as brain corals. It should be provided with a fine-grained substrate of at least 3 inches (7.5 cm) in depth. The white tailed wrasse considered marginal reef or fish-only aquarium fishes, as it can be difficult to maintain for any length of time.
