The Umbrella Leather Green Polyp, Sarcophyton sp., is one of the easiest corals to keep in a home aquarium making it a perfect coral for beginner aquarists. Its inherent beauty makes it an attractive coral to own for experienced aquarists as well. It is a soft leather coral with a mushroom-like polyp that is a muted green color. At night, its tentacles will extend giving off a fascinating show to watch as they move with the current of the tank searching for food. The Umbrella Leather Green Polyp has alternate names of the Toadstool Mushroom Leather Coral, Trough Coral, or Sarcophyton Coral.

  • They require no feeding because they are photosynthetic but they will benefit from supplemental feedings of small meaty foods or reef foods. 
  • The Umbrella Leather Green Polyp thrives in tanks with moderate to high lighting, moderate waterflow, and can be placed anywhere. 
  • Some distance should be kept away from other corals during placement to ensure that their tentacles do not hit each other causing harm.
  • Sometimes, the Umbrella Leather Green Polyp will take a few days to open after shipping, this is normal, and ample time should be given to let it open naturally. 
Overall, the Umbrella Leather Green Polyp is an excellent beginner coral because of its hardiness and resistance to tank fluctuations.
